The Lyme Library is honored to present a week of educational presentations on the life and work of Lyme’s native son and heroic crusader for racial justice, David Ruggles. Join us for a week of wonderful and important programs

  • Monday June 23rd @ 6:00pm Local historian Jim Lampos will discuss the life , work and, historical impact of David Ruggles on American society
  • Tuesday, June 24th @ 6:00pm (Zoom) Dr. Jonathan Wells, Professor in the history of Afroamerican and African studies will present on his book “The Kidnapping Club: Wall Street, Slavery and Resistance on the Eve of the Civil War” via Zoom
  • Wednesday, June 25th @ 2:00pm Local historian Tom Schuch will be speaking about the Ruggles legacy and his genealogical connections to Lyme.
  • Thursday, June 26th @ 6:00pm (Zoom) Dr. Graham Hodges, author of “David Ruggles: A Radical Abolitionist and the Underground Railroad in New York City” will speak about how David Ruggles saved lives via the Underground Railroad.
  • Saturday, June 28th @ 2:00-4:00pm Calling artists of all ages to help make history happen at the library! Local artist (and member of PARJE– Public Art for Racial Justice Education ) Nancy Gladwell will be at the library helping participants to paint a mural of David Ruggles that will be hung in the Lyme Library upon completion .
