A David Ruggles Week Special Event: Historian Tom Schuch on David Ruggles Legacy in Lyme

June 25 @ 2:00 pm 3:00 pm

In the 1830s, there was no more fierce advocate for abolition and freedom in America than David Ruggles.  He died in 1849 at the age of 39 from a series of health issues, compounded by the beatings, and battles that he experienced as one of the most visible, militant and indefatigable advocates of freedom in antebellum America. This presentation will clarify his place of birth, and it will also reveal some previously unknown facts about his family origin that connect his family to Lyme.

Tom Schuch is a New London native and a graduate of Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., with a longstanding interest in social justice issues and discovering forgotten, hidden or suppressed local history. He currently serves on the Board of Directors of the New London County Historical Society.
