SUMMER READING
Catch the Reading Bug! – Summer Reading Program Kickoff – Tuesday, June 24  6:30 P.M.

Working Together Again and Expanding

2008 marks the 4th anniversary of the Lyme Public Library &Lyme Consolidated School Summer Reading Partnership .It was in 2004 when the Lyme Library and the Lyme School received the first annual Governor's Summer Reading Challenge Award for outstanding partnerships.

This year the partnership expands to include all three elementary schools in Regional District 18 as well as Lyme Old Lyme Middle School and the Old Lyme PGN library.  The media specialists from all the schools, both towns’ children’s librarians and the Reading Specialist for Region 18 collaborated on this program to offer ONE Summer Reading Program.

The LPL will begin its collaborative summer reading program by having each class from LCS visit the library during school library time. This visit familiarizes all the students with the library, services offered, and introduces the summer reading programs planned throughout the summer, all of which are lead by Kristen Thornton, and gives the children an opportunity to meet and visit with Emma the Library Cat!

The Kickoff program will be Tuesday, June 24 at 6:30 P.M. at the Library.  Summer reading is not only fun, it is an essential part of every child’s educational success.   Help your child to Catch the Reading Bug!   Please call to register.

ADULT/FAMILY  PROGRAMS
Library Book Club  - Thursdays,  May 8 and June 19 at 7:00 P.M.

On Thursday, May 8, East Haddam resident and author Bruce McGhie will join the book club to discuss his book Ascent: How One Quadriplegic Fought for a Full Life and Soared.  Bruce was injured in an Air-Force training exercise in 1955 at the age of 22 and left paralyzed from the chest down with limited use of his hands.  Refusing to give up his dreams, Bruce overcame numerous obstacles to marry, have a family, a successful business career that required travel all over the world, and in 1980 became the first spinal-cord injured person to be issued a pilot’s license by the FAA to fly a glider with hand controls.  The public is invited to attend this special book club meeting to meet Bruce and hear his remarkable and inspiring story.

On Thursday, June 19 the book club will discuss Away by Connecticut author Amy Bloom.  The novel centers around a 22-year-old Jewish immigrant whose husband and parents were killed in a Russian pogrom, and whose three year old daughter is missing and presumed dead.  After beginning to make a life for herself in New York, she gets word that her daughter may be alive and sets off alone to make the trip back to Russia via the Yukon Territory.  Publishers Weekly says “Bloom has created an extraordinary range of characters, settings and emotions. Absolutely stunning.”  A limited number of copies of the novel will be available at the Library 3-4 weeks before the discussion.
