Haiti: Heartbreak and
Hope presented by Kyn Tolson – Thursday, August 5 7:00
Months have passed since the catastrophic
earthquake shook Haiti, killing more than 230,000, maiming hundreds of thousands
of others, and leaving millions homeless. While the emergency response from
around the world was in itself phenomenal, the real recovery and reconstruction
efforts have yet to begin. Tent camps—both massive and small—cover the capital
city of Port-au-Prince. Public buildings, schools, stores, and churches still
lie in heaps of rubble. And towns and cities
throughout the country struggle to absorb a flood of refugees. The rainy season
and imminent hurricane season pose ominous threats.
Even before Jan. 12th , Haiti had little—if nothing—in the way of public health, public welfare, public education, public transportation. Today, Haiti aims to rebuild itself as it has never been. Kyn Tolson, the development director of Haitian Ministries, will give a presentation about the devastation in Haiti and efforts of Haitian Ministries to help rebuild lives and futures. She has been to Haiti three times since the earthquake as part of emergency relief efforts.
Haitian Ministries, which has worked in Port-au-Prince for a quarter of a century, never imagined celebrating this milestone anniversary year by delivering emergency aid to thousands of desperate people. In the last six months, the agency has given assistance and hundreds of thousands of dollars to the children and families in programs and communities that have been its partners for many years. Haitian Ministries for the Diocese of Norwich is also known as Partners for Haiti. It is an independent non-profit that does not discriminate in any way in its work in Haiti nor in its hiring practices. It seeks to help those in need, regardless of faith or affiliations. Please call to register.
READING GROUP
Reading Group does not meet in July and August. Regular meetings will resume in September.

Book sale
Thanks to all the volunteers who helped make our sale a success again
this year. We couldn’t have done it without their help. We were fortunate to
have beautiful weather, and it was fun to catch up with patrons and neighbors
who came to stock up on reading material.
The Library accepts donations year round for the sale. Whenever you get around to cleaning out your bookshelves, you can bring them to the library if you wish to donate them to our sale.
Library Policies –
Museum passes
Due to the popularity of some of our museum passes, the library has
instituted a new policy. Patrons may reserve each library pass in advance once
per month. After that, they may stop in or call the library on the day they
wish to use the pass, and if it is available, they may check it out. The
Library currently has the following passes available for loan: Mystic Aquarium
and Institute for Exploration, Florence Griswold Museum, No Child Left Inside CT
State Park Pass, CT Old State House Pass, New Britain Museum of American Art,
and the Wadsworth Atheneum.
